Casket Protection Vaults: Costs, Requirements, and Options
What role do burial vaults serve in a cemetery? A burial vault surrounds a casket below ground and is designed to help support the soil above the grave. Depending on its construction, it may limit the amount of soil and surface water that reach the casket, but it does not make a grave permanent or stop natural change. The cemetery's maintenance needs and the product's stated performance are useful context when weighing the benefits of burial vaults.
These questions are useful even when a family has already selected burial vaults for caskets through a funeral home. The funeral home can explain its package, but the cemetery determines what it will accept at the grave. When a particular model is unavailable or unsuitable, request an alternative in writing and ask how the change affects the total charge.
What do U.S. cemeteries require for burial vaults? Requirements are set by individual cemeteries, not by one universal U.S. rule. A cemetery may require an outer burial container for in-ground casket burial to help maintain level grounds and accommodate mowing or other maintenance, while another may allow a liner, a vault, or no container for particular graves or burial types.
For example, a family choosing between a basic liner and a reinforced vault should compare itemized prices and the exact specifications, not just the product names. If the cemetery requires a full vault, the lower-cost liner is not a practical substitute; if it accepts either, the choice can reflect budget and personal preference without assuming one option guarantees a particular preservation outcome.
Ask the cemetery whether its policy permits a grave liner or burial without an enclosure; the answer depends on that cemetery's rules and the burial location. If the vault is a condition of interment there, choosing a different product may not resolve the issue. Request the policy in writing before making a purchase.
